Having the best job in the world

7th Aug 2009

I was at a primary school concert earlier this week to hear our youngest daughter playing her clarinet. The band leader, Paul Wilson, is totally inspirational. The sound these young children produce is quite spectacular, and considering their age, really quite magical! Britain's got talent has got nothing on this young band!

At the end of the concert, Paul, with tears in his eyes, told the audience, with absolute sincerity: "I have the best job in the world." The poignancy of his words made me think how wonderful it would be if we all believed that we have the best job in the world.

I feel privileged to be able to say with equal sincerity that I have the best job in the world. And I'd bet that my great friend Lisa Whitehead from the Calma Wellness Centre (who's helping me with this blog) would say that she also has the best job in the world. (Lisa is a highly gifted holistic therapist, who also happens to know all about blogging.)

Creative expression

So, I mused: What makes a job - whatever that job may be - feel like the best job in the world? It's my belief that we are ALL creative, and that creative expression is really what we are all about. Why should it be any other way? The Earth, which we are all part of, is continuously creating.

Every spring sees the creation of a whole new world - blossom appears on trees, new-born lambs appear in fields, shoots spring out of the ground - it's constant creation - all around us. It is exactly as it always has been, and exactly as it should be. Why then should we feel separate from that constant creative energy?

My personal experience, when I'm expressing myself creatively, is that everything feels balanced and in harmony. It's as if I am part of a larger energy - not separate from it. I just know with absolute certainty that I'm doing exactly what I'm meant to do be doing.

Children are highly creative. As a child, there's so much to explore and discover. But sadly - for a whole raft of reasons - that creative energy -that we were so in touch with as children - can become stifled.

Stress, financial demands, expectation of others, criticism, ambition to 'be the best' ... can all stifle creativity. (Believe me - I've been there!)

So maybe, having the best job in the world is about being in touch with your creativity, expressing it with passion and authenticity, and staying true to your beliefs.
